Academics Strand Reporting Descriptors
Strand-level data provides educators with the detailed insights needed to tailor instruction and effectively close learning gaps, ensuring every student can achieve their full potential.
Strand reporting is provided on three levels:
Red = Student(s) need(s) review on prerequisite skills
Yellow/Orange = Student(s are) ready for grade-level instruction
Green = Students(s are) ready for enrichment activities
Lexile Strands
- Foundational Reading Students develop foundational reading skills as they learn to read.
- Print Concepts and Alphabet Knowledge (Grade K): In order to be able to read, students must learn the letters of the alphabet, know that words in print are separated by spaces, and understand that printed text in English is read from left to right and top to bottom.
- Phonological Awareness (Grades K-1): Students must recognize and manipulate the spoken parts of words including, but not limited to, syllables and phonemes.
- Phonics (Grades K-1): Students must grasp the connection between letters and sounds in written language.
- Vocabulary (Grades K-2) Vocabulary is the basic building block of textual meaning. Students use vocabulary knowledge and skills to read and comprehend text.
- Early Reading Comprehension (Grades K-2) Early reading comprehension describes the stage students are in when learning to read sentences and short paragraphs. Comprehension is at its earliest stages.
- Reading Literature (Grades 1-12) Reading literature involves engaging with fiction texts to understand elements such as characters, settings, plots, and themes. Literary texts are often read for pleasure to broaden one's appreciation of the human experience.
- Reading Informational Text (Grades 1-12) Reading informational texts involves actively engaging with nonfiction materials to extract and understand facts, concepts, and ideas about a specific topic. Informational tests are most often read to gain factual knowledge.
Quantile Strands
- Algebra and Algebraic Thinking (Grades K-12) This strand uses symbols and variables to describe the relationship between different quantities. By representing unknowns and understanding the meaning of equality, students develop the ability to use algebraic thinking to make generalizations. Algebraic representations also allow the modeling of an evolving relationship between two or more variables.
- Number Sense (Grades K-8) This strand focuses on the understanding of a number as a specific amount, a product of factors, and the sum of place values in expanded form. With number sense comes an in-depth understanding of the base-ten system, as well as an understanding of the different representations of numbers.
- Numerical Operations (Grades K-8) This strand covers operations using strategies and standard algorithms on different types of numbers but can also use estimation to simplify computation and to determine how reasonable results are. The strand also encompasses computational fluency.
- Measurement (Grades 1-12) This strand covers the characteristics of an object using numerical attributes. It also includes using the concept of a unit to determine length, area, and volume in the various systems of measurement, and the relationship between units of measurement within and between these systems.
- Geometry (Grades K-12) This strand covers the characteristics, properties, and comparison of shapes and structures, including the composition and decomposition of shapes. In addition to looking at abstract shapes and concepts, geometry also provides a structure that can be used to observe the world.
- Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability (Grades 6-12) This strand encompasses the gathering of data and the interpretation of data. The ability to apply knowledge gathered using mathematical methods to draw logical conclusions is an essential skill addressed in data analysis, statistics, and probability.
